Having a severely damaged tooth from a cavity, an injury or a previously problematic filling can be cause for a root canal. Patients often experience an unbearable toothache or tooth sensitivity before a root canal is suggested by their dentist. A root canal involves numbing the area, removing the infected or inflamed pulp from the inside of the tooth, carefully cleaning and disinfecting it and finally filling the tooth.
Undergoing a root canal is a serious procedure, but it is relatively painless and extremely effective. Most root canals can be completed in only one or two appointments: one appointment to remove the infected pulp, shape the root canal and put in a temporary filling, and one appointment to put the permanent filling in. Before you know it, you’ll be back to eating the foods and drinking the beverages that used to cause you such pain!
